Overview and Itinerary :

Check our 4 Days 3 Night Desert Tour from Fes and back to Fes to enjoy the magic of the Sahara Desert and sightsseing at the atlas mountains and the gorgeous gorges.

Day 1: Fes - Ifrane - Sahara Desert Dunes

Your day starts at 7:00 am when your knowledgeable, English speaking guide and driver from Fes Authentic Tours picks you up from your hotel or riad. Then we depart for Merzouga where the magnificent Erg Chebbi Dunes await you. These dunes are known for their great size and height, reaching up to 50 metres and rolling away eastwards all the way into the Algerian Sahara.

But the first section of your memorable journey takes you to the quaint town of Ifrane, built by the French during their colonial rule of the country in the 1930's and known as Morocco's 'Switzerland' due to the quaint Alpine style of its architecture. During the winter months the area is snow covered and it's a surprise to many to discover that nearby is the fully equipped ski-resort of Michliffen.

Then you will head for the richly fragrant Cedar forests around Azrou in the Middle Atlas Mountains where you will encounter the famous Barbary Apes, actually a type of macaque monkey, but beware! They may try to steal your lunch! You'll continue on through the clear, fresh air of the mountains until you reach Rissani, the main town on the edge of the Sahara Desert. Afterwards, continuing South, suddenly the dunes of the Erg Chebbi will appear as if out of nowhere. You'll then reach your Kasbah/ hotel situated at the foot of the sand dunes. Relax after your long drive, have dinner and stay overnight, while listening to the traditional strains of time-honoured Berber music.

Day 2: Experience the Magic of The Sahara Desert

After breakfast, you can enjoy some hiking in the awesome dunes of the Erg Chebbi. Cool off with a swim in the hotel pool, use your free time to just chill out and enjoy the desert your way. Or there is the option of a shopping trip to Merzouga city and the town of Khamlia, known as "the village of the black people" as it's friendly inhabitants are descendants of slaves brought from the Sudan. They will need no encouragement to play you their delightful brand of Gnawa music on traditional instruments.

At dusk, your camel awaits you to take your on an amazing ninety minute trek into the desert where you will enjoy the sunset over the dunes.

Spend your second night in a tent in a Berber encampment, surrounded by towering dunes, where your guide will cook you an authentic Moroccan meal. Doze off whilst listening to the sweet sounds of the Berber music and watch the moon rise among the myriad stars, so close you will feel you could almost reach out and touch them and then sleep in the sublime Sahara.

Day 3: Desert - Fantastic Fossils - Gorgeous Gorges

An early start, as you are awoken to experience the splendour of the sun rising over the sand dunes, then you will ride your camel gently back to your hotel for breakfast, during the ride, you cannot fail to notice the shifting and changing of the shadows cast by the dunes, lengthening and shrinking as the day progresses.

After breakfast, the journey to The Todra Gorge begins with a drive to the main Sahara's edge town of Rissani, the first capital of the Alaouite dynasty. Next it's on to Erfoud with it's array of famous fossils, be sure to pick up a beautiful bargain, but son't forget to haggle! You also get to visit the wonderful workshops where men prepare the fossils, removing them from the rocks and cleaning them up with expert skill.

The voyage carries on through 300 metre deep canyon of the Todgha Gorges cut through the easternmost tip of the High Atlas Mountains, close to the village of Tinghir where you will get the chance to do a spot of relaxed hiking. The Tinghir and Todgha Gorges are the highest and narrowest in Morocco and, some would say, the most beautiful.
