Your tour starts at 7 am when your knowledgeable, English speaking driver from Fes Authentic Trips will pick you up from your riad or hotel. So begins the journey to Merzouga where the Erg Chebbi Dunes await you! These dunes are renowned for their great size, attaining a height of up to fifty metres and stretch eastwards all the way into the Algerian Sahara. But first, the journey includes a stop off at the little town of Ifrane, known as "Morocco's Switzerland" due to it's Alpine style of architecture.
Next is a visit to the Azrou cedar forest in the Middle Atlas mountains where you can see the famous Barbary apes, actually a type of macaque monkey, in their natural habitat, but beware! They may try to steal your lunch! Continuing through the beautiful and impressive mountains, you'll arrive at the edge-of-Sahara town of Rissani. Then you will head further south until the Erg Chebbi sand dunes suddenly appear, as if out of nowhere. And on to your Kasbah/ hotel situated at the foot of the dunes where you'll be able to relax after your long drive, you'll be able to enjoy a specially prepared traditional Berber dinner and go to sleep to the relaxing tones of timeless Berber music.
After a hearty breakfast, the day is yours to decide what to do, it's free time to enjoy the desert your way. You can choose to go hiking in the awe-inspiring dunes of the Erg Chebbi. Or you may wish to cool off with a swim in the hotel pool. Another option is a shopping trip to Merzouga city and the nearby Khamlia, known as the village of the black people, who are descendants of slaves brought from the Sudan and will play you their unique brand of Gnawa music.
At sunset, your camel awaits to take you on an unforgettable hour and a half trek into the Sahara where you will get to see the breathtaking sunset. Spend your night in an authentic Berber encampment, in a tent, surrounded by the towering dunes where your guide will prepare you a special Moroccan repast. Relax, listen to the sweet strains of the Berber music and gaze at the myriad of stars and bright, seemingly close moon in the amazing Sahara desert.
Wake up to a stunning sunrise over the dunes and ride your camel back to the hotel, while watching the strangely shifting shadows thrown by the dunes. Breakfast, then begin the journey to Marrakech through the impressive Todra Gorges, a 300 metre canyon ripped through the eastern edge of the High Atlas Mountains and stop off near the town of Tinghir where you can do some hiking. Then on to the town of Kelaat Mgouna, a Berber settlement that celebrates the Festival of Roses, try out some of the rose waters and oils they produce that can leave your clothes and linen smelling sweetly for weeks.
Afterwards, we visit the town of Taourirt, and visit the kasbah there which is one of the most beautiful and attractive sites in Morocco and has UNESCO World Heritage Site status. Explore the kasbah on foot to get the feel of this traditional style of Moroccan architecture. The it's the final stretch to Marrakech, along the snaky, twisting road through the High Atlas Mountains and the Tizi n'Tichka pass. Then we'll depart on the journey through the Atlas Mountains to Merzouga where the Erg Chebbi dunes await you! These dunes are renowned for their impressive size; up to 50 metres high and they stretch on eastwards all the way into the Algerian Sahara.
Firstly, though, it's a stop off at Ifrane, often called 'Morocco's Switzerland' due to its Alpine style of architecture, then you'll head on into the cedar forests around Azrou in the Middle Atlas Mountains where can see the famous Barbary apes, actually a species of macaque monkey, in their natural habitat. The drive continues along stunning mountain roads until you reach Rissani, an important town on the margins of the Sahara Desert. Afterwards, you continue on south until the Erg Chebbi Dunes suddenly appear, as if out of nowhere. Then enjoy an unforgettable camel trek for an hour and a half into the desert at sunset to reach our private camp, surrounded by the towering sand dunes. Relax, listen to some old-style Berber music and gaze at the myriad of stars and the bright, bright moon that seems so close in the amazing Sahara. Then it's a special dinner and an overnight stay in a tent in the Merzouga desert camp.
Wake up to a breathtaking sunrise over the Erg Chebbi and ride you camel through the ever changing shadows cast by the dunes to your hotel where you will have breakfast. It's an opportunity for the locals to meet up and sell the many products made from the roses. Try out some of the rosewater and oils which will leave your clothes and linen sweet-smelling for days or even weeks afterwards.
The next stop is at Skoura, a fertile oasis lined with immense palm groves and boasting spectacular views of the High Atlas Mountains. Then you'll continue your trip to Ouarzazate where you'll have dinner ans spend the night in an hotel.
After breakfast, enjoy a visit to the cinema studios and sets at Ouarzazate, which is known as the "Hollywood of Africa" Many famous movies have been shot here and you can also visit the museum to see props and costumes from films like "The Living Daylights" and "The Mummy" and TV shows such as "Game of Thrones". Afterwards, you get to visit the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Ait Benhaddou Kasbah. This ancient village has been used as the backdrop for more than twenty films including, "Gladiator", "Indiana Jones" and "Lawrence of Arabia". Then, enjoy a stroll to explore the traditional Moroccan style of architecture in which the kasbah is built.
Finally, you'll continue on your way to Marrakech through the mighty High Atlas Mountains and the Tizi n'Tichka pass, along it's snaky, twisting roads, enjoying the beautiful scenery and views and quaint Berber mountain villages perched on the mountainsides en route. Your journey ends with arrival at Marrakech where you'll be dropped off at your hotel/ riad by your Fes Authentic Tours driver.
